We’ve taken some time out to catch up with a few of our tenants – next up is Graham Moir, the founder of Graham Moir Associates, a busy architectural practice based here at The Hive.
Introducing Graham Moir Associates
Graham Moir Associates works in the Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset region on a huge variety of commercial and residential projects. It’s completed around 2,500 projects to date. Its staff are expert in all stages of the architectural process from creating concepts and designs to acquiring planning permission and consulting on Building Regulations. Their work in and around Weston includes Hussain’s restaurant, Alpha Signs’ new building, the Ebdon Arms Pub and, more recently, residential developments in Ashcombe Road, Sand Bay and at Camden Terrace (opposite Tesco car park). They generally work within a 20-mile radius of Weston, though they’ve undertaken projects in Devon and Cornwall. They’re currently working on a housing redevelopment on the Dartmoor National park.
Graham has lived locally since childhood. He trained in architectural design in Bristol. His company has no website, which may surprise some but Graham simply says, “We get so many great word-of-mouth recommendations that we’ve always had a constant stream of work. That said, we are currently in the process of providing a website contact page”.
Graham has worked with colleague Mike Tremlett for 13 years and they’ve been based at The Hive for the last two years.
Why The Hive
Graham explains, “We worked at our previous office for many years. It was hidden away above a glazing factory on the Oldmixon Crescent. Our neighbours were great, it just wasn’t the most practical place to be. Permission had to be sought for visitors to enter the building for health and safety reasons which wasn’t ideal when clients turned up or if drop-ins arrived unannounced. We sought somewhere calmer and without any health and safety issues – a nicer environment for the type of work we do. We did some research and The Hive jumped out immediately.”
Graham moved his practice to The Hive in late 2017 and hasn’t looked back. It occupies a 16-square-metre office, which is at the smaller end of the units available on easy rental terms at The Hive. He says, “It’s a nice building – warm, welcoming and friendly. It’s got car-parking for clients and reception staff who deal with our visitors in a friendly and professional way. Everyone who’s visited us here has been impressed with the whole set up. The building itself, the security, the break-out spaces and having dozens of other businesses close by is great. Several clients have enquired about getting their own offices here. It’s also useful knowing exactly what our outgoings are going to be with an all-in rent cost so there are no end-of-month surprises.”
Hive Horizons – what’s next?
Graham and colleague Mike are happy with their office space and professional arrangement at The Hive. Graham concludes, “The atmosphere’s great and we both really enjoy turning up for work here”.
