North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA) are celebrating the news that work has started on a major new roundabout that will open the route to thousands of jobs and homes in Weston-super-Mare and to ‘The Hive’ business centre, a new 20,000 sq ft managed workspace.
The Hive will be built and managed by NSEA on Weston Park, the site of the former Weston Airfield. Set to open in 2014 the energy-efficient and sustainable business centre will support small businesses and allow them to start-up and grow by providing flexible office space with short term leases and expandable space for around 40-60 tenants.
The new roundabout, the first stage of the Cross Airfield Link (CAL), is likely to be finished within nine months and is a key milestone in the progress of the Junction 21 Enterprise Area being the access point for the redevelopment of the old airfield site including a Business Quarter which will include a hotel, pub and offices providing up to 4,000 jobs.
Later stages will include 900 homes and when the site as a whole is built out it is expected that it will accommodate up to 2400 homes in total, along with two new primary schools and a range of community facilities.
NSEA Chief Executive Angela Hicks, said: “This latest progress is excellent news for the business and local community. It brings the building of The Hive one step closer, which will be a huge leap towards start-up and small businesses having the advice, support and facilities on hand that they need to grow and create new jobs in the area.”
