DHD Structures is a structural and civil engineering practice, with extensive design and construction experience and a specialist knowledge and expertise of historic buildings.
The business was founded by Director and Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer Duncan Hill in 2015, fulfilling his ambition to set up his own
organisation and be his own boss. Having worked extensively within the construction industry for a variety of large consultancies and contractors and on projects both in the UK and overseas, Duncan was able to bring vast experience accrued over two decades to the new company.
Spotting a niche for a local practice with customer service and engineering excellence at its heart, DHD Structures set out to deliver efficient and buildable designs for new builds, extension works and alterations to existing properties. The company also offers a full structural survey service, assessing and diagnosing defects to buildings, whether masonry, steelwork, concrete or timber structures.
The five-strong DHD Structures team predominantly serves the South West but has projects stretching from London to Scotland and works with a variety of private clients, architects, builders and developers who value a high quality design service with a personal approach.
The company has also accumulated extensive experience of new build design within the domestic, education, health, commercial and retail sectors.
All work is undertaken by experienced engineers Chartered by the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
“We are passionate about solving problems by providing designs which are elegant and simple to construct whilst quality is at the heart of our ethos”. explains Duncan. “We enjoy working with both specifiers and clients, helping them realise their vision through the use of creative and efficient engineering solutions.
“We are extremely busy with private client work, with commercial conversions proving especially popular at present and our skills in redesigning former offices into new residential apartments are much in demand.
“We have invested in technology which feeds into the quality of our designs and we offer a level of client service and expertise that simply isn’t delivered by our larger competitors.” Duncan continues. “We also believe successful designs are derived from understanding what each client is seeking to achieve and tailoring our approach to add value on each project.
“Our approach is standing us in great stead and has led us to grow faster than planned! In the year ahead we will be consolidating, ensuring that our team remains consistent and of course, enjoying our new office space.”
DHD Structures became a virtual tenant at The Hive three months after formation, in October 2015. The company began renting a shared office in February 2016 and then moved into its own offices in November.
Duncan chose The Hive as it met so many different criteria.
“Motorway access is easy and transport links are excellent, which is helpful for our clients and for site visits. Being able to work close to home is an added bonus!” he says.
“We enjoy being part of the business community here too. It’s good to be networking with other start-ups and there’s always someone with whom you can share queries or from whom you can gain advice over a morning coffee.
“The professional atmosphere is excellent and The Hive’s team have been extremely helpful.” Duncan concludes. “We are delighted with all that we have here.”
